J3 CONCLUDES CKI OPENING ROUND AT NCMP

A new series and a familiar venue proved to be the right step forward for some of the world’s Karting elites this past weekend. CKI paired with New Castle Motorsports Park to host the inaugural round of the 2009 CKI championship. J3 Competition led its usual charge with entries in the KF3, KF2, and IAME categories bringing yet again a talent core of drivers.

As Thursday’s open practice progressed the staff at New Castle provided abundant track time for all competitors. With several sessions the team was able to test multiple configurations as it moved toward the optimal setup for Friday’s qualifying rounds.

Tristan DeGrand led the junior charge for J3 Competition with participation in both IAME Jr. and KF3. DeGrand would qualify third in KF3 and second in IAME Jr. giving himself a great chance to gain valuable points on the road to Sunday’s finals. Saturday’s KF3 events worked out perfect for DeGrand as he captured two wins and a second, thus putting himself on the pole for Sunday’s pre-final. Saturday’s IAME Jr. results were mixed although Tristan put in great performances the team would have some work in order to gain the necessary speed for Sunday. Sunday started out picture perfect as DeGrand would score impressive KF3 pre-final and final wins against some of the World’s top competitors. After winning the 2009 FWT KF3 championship, DeGrand is already poised for a potential repeat in the CKI series. The team was able to secure the necessary speed for Tristan to compete for the win in the IAME Jr. final on Sunday as well. However, a crazy incident during the mid-point of the final sidelined Tristan’s hopes for double victory, yet the young driver was still able to secure the fastest lap of the event.

J3 Competition entered three drivers in the KF2 category – Richard Benitez, Shin Iguchi, and Jeremy Nelson. All three drivers were utilizing the Kosmic Mercury chassis coupled with Vortex RAV power. Friday’s qualifying session ended solidly for Nelson and Benitez; however, Iguchi was plagued with issues forcing him to grid each heat from twelfth place. Moving forward in the three heats on Saturday each driver proved the quality of the material and their potential as the drivers turned very competitive times in each heat race. Sunday’s pre-final was a step forward for the team as all three drivers would grid for the final in the top seven. Unfortunately, Shin Iguchi was forced off track in turn one with damage, thus ending his chances for points. The remaining two drivers, Richard Benitez and Jeremy Nelson battled until the checkered flag securing solid fourth and fifth place finishes.

The weekend was capped off with J3’s participation in IAME Sr. where the duo of Johnny and Adam Johnson worked through a tough weekend as the fiercely battled IAME Sr. class was witness to more carnage and accidents than normally seen. During Sunday’s final, Johnny Johnson was poised for a top ten result when a broken throttle cable ended his efforts at the half-way point.

Other notables from the weekend were the winners of the driver exchange program with the FKCS in England. J3 Competition driver Tristan DeGrand was one of the recipients of the KF3 award and Kosmic cadet driver Ashley Rogero received one of the Cadet awards. These two drivers will compete in England at PF Internationals circuit with financial assistance from CKI and FKCS later this summer.
